MEETING - November 5th

WHEN: Thursday, November 5, 2009, 11:00 am to 2:30 pm
Program I, the Ethics component, will run from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Lunch will be served at 12:00 pm and end by 1:00 pm. Program II, the Professionalism component, and Program III, the Substance Abuse component, will run from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm, respectively.

WHERE: The Athletic Club of Columbus, 136 E. Broad St.

TOPIC: Ethics, Professionalism, and Substance Abuse Program
Joseph Dreitler and Mary True will discuss issues related to the filing of sworn claims of use and other papers in federal trademark prosecution. This presentation will discuss consequences including cancellation (15 USC 1064), loss of incontestability (15 USC 1115), civil liability (15 USC 1120), and practitioner discipline (ORPC 1.1, ORPC 3.3, and 37 CFR 10.18), along with the effect of subjective and objective intent standards on potential findings of fraud on the USPTO. Chris Johnson will discuss issues related to social media networking, including staff management issues, attorney management issues, and ORPC rules 1.6 and 3.6. Scott Mote will discuss some of the warning signs of addiction and/or mental illness, as well as the resources available to attorneys facing these issues.

SPEAKERS: Joseph Deritler and Mary True are partners in the Columbus office of Bricker and Eckler LLP, with substantial experience in trademark prosecution and litigation.
Chris Johnson is a partner in the Cleveland office of Thompson Hine LLP, with substantial experience in labor and employment counseling and litigation.
Scott Mote is Executive Director of the Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program, a centralized resource for information concerning Ohio's counseling and assistance committees, as well as a 24/7 resource for making contact with local care providers.

CLE: An application is pending with the Supreme Court of Ohio for 1.0 hours of ethics CLE credit, 1.0 hours of professionalism CLE credit, and 0.5 hours of substance abuse CLE credit.

COST: $40 Members/$50 Non-members (lunch included with RSVP).
